STORYLINE: Hinduism is an integral part of Indian society and its tales of the Gods are woven throughout India’s cultural life. Goddess Parvati and her husband Lord Shiva are among the most popular and are widely worshiped across India. PRIYA’S SHAKTI begins when Parvati hears a cry from one of her devotees, Priya, who has been raped. Goddess Parvati is horrified to learn about the sexual violence that women on Earth face on a daily basis. From sexual harassment on the street to gang rape, women on Earth were not safe. After telling her parents about the rape, Priya had been banished from her home. So the Goddess enters Priya’s consciousness on Earth to help her find justice. She immediately encounters deeply-rooted patriarchal beliefs that enable a culture of rape. With no one willing to help them, they take matter into her own hands and confront one of the rapists. Not realizing that it is the Goddess Parvati, he attacks her. Parvati reveals herself and places a curse on him as he runs-away. Parvati’s anger rouses Shiva who has been meditating in the Himalayas. He flies into a rage and decrees that humans can no longer procreate, ensuring their doom. Both worlds are stunned by this; with some Gods and Goddesses supporting Shiva, while other are opposed. Parvati herself is shocked—she knows that his law will do nothing to help women. However, Shiva remains adamant that humans must be punished. Those who oppose him join forces and fight back against Shiva and his supporters.
A grand battle begins in the Heavens and on Earth killing millions. Parvati sees the destruction that is being wrought and knows she must take radical action to end the slaughter. She calls Goddess Kali into her, incapacitates Shiva on the battlefield and asks him to end the war. Shiva tells Parvati that if she can prove to him that the human race is capable of change, he will rescind his decree. On Earth, Priya has been living in the forest where she is being stalked by a ravenous tiger. Parvati channels the strength of women from the past and future into Priya. Filled with streeshakti, Priya finds her inner strength and is no longer afraid. Mounting the tiger, Priya returns to town that had cast her out. The townspeople are amazed and terrified. She sings an empowering mantra that enraptures thousands and moves them to take action. Led by Priya, her followers, both men and women, spread the message of women’s equality across the Earth, and not to remain silent in the face of violence against women and injustice. Seeing what Priya has done, Shiva is impressed and rescinds his decree. How will you stand with Priya?
