PRIYA’S MIRROR
Story by Paromita Vohra & Ram Devineni and Art by Dan Goldman. Priya joins forces with a group of acid attack survivors as they fight against the demon-king, Ahankar, and his tyrannical hold on them. Funded by the World Bank, the next edition titled, PRIYA’S MIRROR, focuses on acid attacks and tackles the problem of gender violence around the world. The comic book was created by and features acid attack survivors from New York City, Bogota, and New Delhi. PRIYA’S MIRROR premiered at the New York Film Festival, at Film Society of Lincoln Center, NYC from September 30 to October 16, 2016 and at the Mumbai Comic Con, Oct 22-23, 2016. Featured in the comic book is MONICA SINGH who is a motivational speaker, humanitarian and well known social activist for Violence Against Women at UN. Currently appointed as Global Youth Champion by UN Women, and a spokesperson at United Nations representing Face of Resilience from India – United States of America. She is a fashion designer and founder of Mahendra Singh Foundation and Vice President of Indian NGO. Also featured in the comic is NATALIA PONCE DE LEON, who had a liter of sulfuric acid thrown over her face and body by a man who she had never spoken to in Bogota, Colombia. Inspired by Natalia’s “The Last Mask” campaign, readers can put on a digital mask through augmented reality and share their photo on social media to show their support and solidarity.
The comic book was funded by the World Bank’s WEvolve Global Initiative, which is aimed at changing attitudes and behaviors that lead to gender inequities, including gender violence. Co-produced worldwide with Mahendra Singh Foundation. Co-produced with Natalia Ponce de Leon Foundation in Colombia. Co-produced with Acid Survivors Trust International (A.S.T.i) in the UK. Apne Aap Women Worldwide is the nonprofit engagement partner.
