THE MAN WHO PLANTED A FOREST ENTIRELY ALONE
By Ram Devineni (Assam, India)

A humble farmer, Jadav Payeng, planted an entire forest in his native village in Assam located in northern India.  Also known as the “Forest Man of India,” he noticed the land was being taken over by the mighty Brahmaputra river because of a lack of trees. Payeng started planting here in 1979, and entirely on his own planted over 1300 acres of trees. He plans to continue to plant an additional 5,000 acres with the help of his daughter who has taken over his crusade.  Payeng is very hopeful of the future of the land and the young generation who will look over it. Payeng has received one of India's highest civilian awards, the Padma Shri, and many other honors.
